Member Bio

Born and raised in sunny Los Angeles, Emily lives near the beach and finds inspiration from the beauty in nature and in people. Every plant, animal, and person is unique, and her art captures the vibrant colors and fantastic diversity of this big world. Conservation is a cause close to her heart, and thus her work celebrates many creatures that are endangered by human recklessness and pollution.

Emily is heavily involved in the South Bay art scene of southern California. She was recently appointed by Mayor Steve Aspel to the position of Public Art Commissioner for the city of Redondo Beach. She is also involved with local groups such as the Redondo Beach Art Group, Hermosa Beach Artist Collective, and several others. Her work has been shown in prestigious shows throughout California, at the Torrance Art Museum, and is collected nationwide.

Emily spends her free time serving at her church, "adventuring," and investing in her friendships. She can often be found riding her beach cruiser along the strand or exploring a local hiking trail.

Being an artist, what does that mean? To me, it means one who practices art. I started drawing and painting when I was a kid, the only difference is I never stopped. "All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he (or she!) grows up. ”-Pablo Picasso. This quote pretty much describes how I feel about being an artist. I never stopped practicing art because I couldn't stop. It's like getting dressed; it's always a part of my day. I have continued to paint throughout my years of running my Jewelry company and being a busy mom of two. Locally in Manhattan Beach I have had the honor of painting with Terri Burris who has been a tremendous guide in my recent artworks. I have also been privileged to teach art at the elementary level for the past 8 years through an amazing art program called Young at Art. Living by the ocean is a huge influence for me as I am constantly inspired by it's force, texture and beauty.

Wake, Make, Create and Repeat! That's my daily moto.

Artist Dane Capo is a native Californian that grew up in the Hermosa Beach culture.

Dane was diagnosed with epilepsy at 10 months old and found to have autism at age five. He began his education in Hermosa Beach Schools but his father’s film career took the Capo family all over the world and took Dane into the classroom’s of Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Not only did Dane have exposure to different cultures, but he developed a yearning for travel, a love for all kinds of people, and a relentless drive to be independent.

Dane’s first painting happened shortly after he lost his grandmother, also a talented painter. At the time, he was studying art history and the Great Masters with one of his homeschool teachers, Amanda. Dane just decided to pick up a brush and paint his interpretation of Matisse’s self portrait.

The results were extraordinary. With each stroke he thoughtfully and without filter, chose bright colors and dark shadows. An unexplained talent that amazes even the toughest art critic.

Today, Dane has built up a collection and is involved in numerous art shows, art media coverage and exhibits. He continues to create his own Masterpieces as his talent continues to grow.

When not Painting, Dane enjoys shopping, gardening, and wandering around Los Angeles meeting new people and experiencing his own version independence.

I paint because I am a creator by my very nature of beingness. Painting excites me, it allows for the expression of the now moment, always infused with the energy of life. always expansive.
I am self taught... In a moment I literally put paint to canvas and the Artist within me birthed. The canvas became my tool for free self expression revealing the prisons I had created to keep me small. The vibrancy, the boldness and layers that come through my art describe the layers and depth of the experiences of my life. The fluidity of the images reflect the freedom that I feel within.
My work has been placed in homes in Turkey, Austria, South Africa and the United States. I am an advocate for the limitless potentials of life and in my children's words "I am fun to play with"

Ryan Held’s paintings draw from the work of master expressionists while evoking a deeper understanding of what it means to move freely in space.  Each piece is an uplifting abstraction of the feeling and the freedom of climbing through a three-dimensional space.  Since childhood Ryan exercised his creativity through the movement of rock climbing.  Now, he translates his love of the vertical world to the canvas.

“I call it non-linear abstraction.  Through the use of color, line and composition, levels of space are created simulating the infinite movements of life on this earth.  Even something as simple as walking down the sidewalk can prove to be a total unique experience for everyone.

“This notion came as a revelation to me after watching the intricacies of different climbers climbing the same route.  Although the hand holds and foot placements are generally consistent, the extreme subtleties in body position, breath and awareness are ever changing and unique.  My main purpose is to provide the viewer with a glimpse into this art of movement in the vertical realm by means of canvas and paint.”
